In 2004, Boys & Girls Club Board Member and tennis enthusiast, Tom Spencer, had an idea, "Hey, let's bring Professional Tennis to Clearwater and help raise some money for the charity!"  So Tom  initially consulted with the City of Clearwater's Parks & Recreation Dept. as well as the local and national USTA and very soon a dream would soon become a reality!  With the support of Sheriff Jim Coats (Title Sponsor), the City of Clearwater Parks & Recreation's dedicated staff, Doreen Sleeme (Tournament Director), Tom Spencer (Chair and Pro-Am Tournament Director), and numerous community tennis advocates, including the Suncoast Tennis Foundation, in February of 2005, the Henry L.  McMullen Tennis Complex hosted a $10,000 USTA Pro-Ciruit Women's Tournament.

The tournament was such a success that the USTA asked the team in Clearwater to host a  $25,000 Pro-Circuit Women's Tournament in February of 2006. So in 2006, with the support of many sponsors, the City of Clearwater, the friends of the Boys & Girls Clubs and the USTA, the Sheriff Jim Coats Clearwater Open provided internationally ranked players an opportunity to compete for $25,000 in prize money and earn WTA (Women's Tennis Assoc.) ranking points, which help them qualify for a chance to play in a Grand Slam. Locally, the proceeds from the tournament helped make a positive influence in the lives of disadvantaged youths by providing proceeds to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast.

In 2007 and 2008, Theresa A. Victory would serve as the tournament director and the event began to attract new sponsors and continued to provide an opportunity for young, aspiring professional athletes to pursue their dreams.  This past year, thanks to collective efforts of all of our sponsors, volunteers, the local community and the City of Clearwater Parks & Rec. Dept.,  the 4th Annual Sheriff Jim Coats Clearwater Open was such a  successful $25,000 Pro-Circuit Tournament that the USTA offered an opportunity to host a $50,000 tournament in February of 2009 in Clearwater.

The 5th Annual Sheriff Jim Coats Clearwater Women's Open, benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast, will be held at the Henry L. McMullen Tennis Complex (1000 Edenville Ave., Clearwater, FL) February 23- March 1 of 2009. Nationwide, there are only fourteen $50,000level events on the Pro Circuit calendar. Most tournaments at this level will attract players from approximately 20 different countries and can attract players with rankings as high as 50-100! Just to put this into perspective, players ranked between 106-227 are direct acceptances into the US OPEN!
